400 bore

400 bore

I have bored serveral 400 engines .30 over but now need to go .40. Is this OK?

I would look into finding another block before I send that much on that one. Start a tread in the parts wanted section and see what happens.

My favorite machine shop will put in a sleeve for $80. For normal driving I've heard they're OK. John

If you are talking about E block 400's they have very thick cylinder walls since they can be bored out to 425ci so an .040 is nothing to worry about.

Years ago, Chris Witt claimed that he saw a cutway G-block 400 with very, very thick walls. In any case, I have yet to see a 1960s cast iron block that couldn't be safely bored 0.060" over.

The engine has already been built with 2 sleeves and bored .40 over. My machine shop certifies that it has what is listed by the engine builder. Has 800 miles and was running at the time of removal. Ran good with no knocks, ticks or smoke. I can buy it for $1500. What do you think.

Ditto Joe, plus if you need to sleeve it, I have 2 blocks that I have sleeved, and have pounded the living tar out of them with NO issues. G or E block you have NOTHING to worry about.

If it is a 442 engine with all the trimmings, manifolds, and air cleaner etc, then yes, it is worth it.
A long block.....not so much.

Many people have went with the 350 Olds piston in the early 400. To do this you need to go .057 out, so .040 is nothing to worry about.

Yes, but this only works in the short-stroke 400 motors. I don't think we ever were told which the O.P. has.

Thanks for the infomation. Now I can make a choice of engines offered on something besides difference in price.

yep I just noticed that also. he may be talking about the 68 / 69 400.

if this is the case then most off the info posted here is about the 400 "B' and "E".

either way if the sleeve job done properly it would probably
hold up better on that cylinder because the material is usually better
then the cast block.
