fixing my crack problem! lmao

I've been clean of crack for maybe 3.5 hours now. I replaced my starter that had a cracked nose but before I put the new one in or buy a starter brace i want to be sure that its not my timing causing the motor to kick back. So could someone tell me what initial timing i should have it set at and what total?

What distributor are you running? That will make all the difference.

Had a very similar problem once on a 6.2 diesel.

In my case, the PO's "mechanic" had epoxied the starter in place because of a stripped hole in the block.

After a very unsatisfying afternoon of drilling upwards while lying on my back in an asphalt driveway, spitting out steel shavings, I managed to make and tap a new, much larger hole. Problem was, it wasn't lined up perfectly, and it only took a few starts to be back at square 1. In the end, I read the manual very carefully regarding starter and flex plate alignment and spacing, used washers and shims, and spaced it out perfectly, just like the manual said, and never had another problem with it.

So, I'd check starter alignment and go from there.

Thanks MD. It seemed to be spaced right without a shim. But im double checking everything so im going to make sure again with this starter. The dist is a DUI street strip. I wanna say its set to 36deg @ 3300RPM. I think thats right ill have to dig the papers up though
