1965 Jetstar 1 carb swap

1965 Jetstar 1 carb swap

I have a 1965 Olds Jetstar 1 with the stock 4GC carb which has been running too rich and has become un-driveable. I decided to put a 1406 Edelbrock carb on and thought I would share some small items with others.

The supplied base gasket had a small uncovered area where a vacuum leak would have occurred so I replaced with a #55 Mr. Gasket. see picture 2

Next problem was that the lower part of the linkage that is for the transmission kick down rubbed on the manifold. This was corrected by cutting / filing off the lower portion of the arm, approximately an 1/8 inch.

Next was the actual center line of throttle rod connection was forward on the Edelbrock so luckily the linkage was adjustable to make up the difference but I needed a new rod bushing for the linkage mount.NAPA sells a great Pedal & Shift bushing kit, 615-1422 and one of the bushing snapped into the linkage hole and was just right for the throttle rod and used original cotter pin to hold it. The bushing needed a little massaging with a file to make the cotter pin fit nicely.

The rest of the install was just connecting fuel line, electrical wires, etc. The car started without even having to touch the throttle, just spun her over a few times and fired up and idled, right out of the box! Love Edelbrocks! I was able to use the original air cleaner with an older base portion

Wow, you are one of a few who actually likes the results of the Edelbrock carb install. A 1" phonelic spacer would have been a good addition, saves grinding and helps with the hot start issues Edelbrock/AFB/AVS have due to their design.

I've had an E-brock carb on my 62 F-85 for eight years now. Never an issue.

Well, at least a handful have had good luck, 4GC rebuilds can be hit or miss.

Ain't that the truth! I've rebuilt and tuned a lot of carbs over the decades. The 4GC on my 62 just kicked my @$$. Rebuilt the thing three times, never could get it to run right. I strongly suspect there was rust in one of the passages in the cast iron base plate that I could not reach to clean out due to pressed-in plugs that were not removable.

I would have loved to have kept the 4GC on the car for nostalgia sake and when it ran good, Wow did it run strong! But after having it rebuilt by a professional with proper kit & parts it ran good but was always hard starting and smelled of raw fuel. But I am a true believer in Edelbrocks as this is the 3 one on my third hot rod. Now on to fine tuning it with some spring changes.

Old thread but intresting , i have an 1406 in my truck and this has been just awesome.
We,ll see if my 4GC stays in my 98 , there is more important to have driveability than
stock carb for me. Thank,s for info all

I'm actually in the same boat. Stock 4GC on my '64 Starfire isn't delivering fuel well. I'm wondering if this EB carb mentioned above would work for me? I've read that the linkage can be what is tough to adapt, and I may just go about cleaning and fitting the original carb back on but was hoping to go aftermarket as its more of a restomod car.

I would assume your car has the 394 so probably would be best to go with the 750 CFM carb. But one thing you can do is just drop by an auto parts place and look at an Edelbrock carb and compare your linkage hook up, etc. Most decent stores have an Edelbrock sitting around.

Not sure if you are writing to me, but looks like the 1406 only comes in 600 CFM, and 1407 is a 750 CFM.

I was replying to OA5599 about the Edelbrock on a 394 Olds. Not sure where the accelerator pump connection came into play, but no harm no foul
