1961 394 Fuel Pump Problems

I am on my second fuel pump and now need another. This is the vacuum pump style. They start leaking oil out of the side where the vent hole is. Is this common? Both pumps still worked fine though. Both were older rebuilds. Is it the materials used in the older pumps?

Thanks
Pat

I had a 64 98 and swapped to an electric fuel pump because the mechanical fuel pumps I had didn't work. They had both been rebuilt in the past but didn't pump fuel because the rubber diaphragm was deteriorated. You might try Fusicks or Kanter for a new one.

I'm still running my junkyard pump that was on the engine, it is a AC flat top unit since I have the standard heater. I also found a rebuilt one on ebay last weekend, buy it now for 20.00. I got it for a spare. He had one more left. I found it in the 61 Oldsmobile Buy it now section. It will be a clean core if anything.

The one that blows, goes to manifold vacuum.

No. But the one that sucks cannot go to the wiper motor because '61 used electric, not vacuum power.

After I made the correction, I subjected myself to 10 lashes with a wet noodle.

Vacuum line goes to the deluxe ventilation/ heater controls; through firewall to under dash T fitting, right side of steering column between vent and heat control units.

Old thread

Though helpful maybe to someone doubtful the original OP is still in need as this thread is over six years old and 88 Coupe hasn't been with us(passed away) for many of those years..... Tedd

Yea I should look at the date. I have been involved with the Corvette Forum and dates are days not years.
