Does anyone know the correct color of the trunk splatter paint that is suppose to be applied to a 70 442?

 

Pretty sure it was still either the charcoal gray with white specs or the black with turqouise specs in it. I purchased my trunk spatter paint from the Parts Place and thought it was fairly good.

 

Use a Black/Aqua trunk paint for your 1970 442.

 

I spray the trunk first with black spray paint. Then spray the spatter paint over that. This makes the spatter paint go much further I have found. Looks just as good. I then spray clear on top of the spatter paint (after it has dried.) The spatter is evidently water soluable and I have had poor luck in getting these old car trunks to be entirely water tight. Water makes it come up/off. Patton is right on the color.

 

I'm doing a resto on my 69 -442. Getting around to the trunk. Does anyone have a link to on-line pics of the trunk splatter spray? I should have taken photos when I was at the Olds Nationals this past summer, but I was too busy looking at all those hot Oldsmobiles!!

It is black/aqua for a 69 442 also. You really don't need pics, no 2 cars were alike, you just attack it. If it goes wrong you just cover the bad part with black + try again. Redvettemike's tip is an excellent one, spray with black first as a base coat. It saves on the spackle paint and allows you to skip some areas. Original spackle was more watery and went on smoother guys in the know make their own.

 

Make sure you do a Clear Coat ..Something Cheap.It will save the Spackle.

I make my own, took ALOT of time and practice to make. This is a pattrn usually found in lansing cars. Freemont cars i know had the fine spritzed pattern. This is more blobs. finishedtrunk.jpg

 

Why did they use this splatter paint anyway? I always thought it looked unfinished.


I like the idea of a clear coat on top. It may not be true to original, but I do get a bit of moisture in the trunk and it wrecks havoc on my splatter paint. Is there any specific type to use?

is rubberized undercoating a Bad idea, in the trunk?


I was thinking of it as a primer of sorts as it says paintable.
Then using the black/aqua speckle paint ( rattle can) over it
then a clear coat ( for the clear coat is a Hard semi-gloss Spar varnish Spray can a Bad idea?)

Here is a shot of original trunk paint in my 1970 442, Lansing car, first week of October 1969. Very dark grey / black with aqua spatter. Interesting that the majority of the trunk pan was not spatter painted but painted a charcoal grey color, and the drain plugs are raw galvanized steel. I assume the plugs are original but I do not know. I do not know what the reddish brown paint / adhesive? / residue in the middle is. It scrapes off without too much effort so I am contemplating removing it.
