Qustion about VIN

hi,,

I have 442 holiday coupe 1971 , can i know if the engine SB or BB from the VIN .

My car's VIN ( 344871M141705)
And there is a number on the block engine (396021F) , the engine heads have a litter (J).

also can i know if it's a manual or automatic transmission?
And what else I can know from the VIN.

thanks for any info.

It is a 71 that is a 442 and made in Lansing, MI

Vin doesn't tell the size of the engine in 71, not until 72.

The casting number lets us know that you have a 455, that is correct for a 71 442. The J on the heads means it has later heads on it 73-76.

There is only a limited amount of info in the VIN for 1971 and earlier. All you can tell is:

Division (Oldsmobile)
Car line (Cutlass, Cutlass Supreme, Delta 88, etc)
Body Style
Year of manufacture
Assembly Plant
Sequential build number

In some cases, you can get limited engine data, mainly is it a six or eight cylinder car (the two digit car line numbers were different for sixes and eights in some years). You cannot prove that the car was an automatic or manual trans, nor can you tell engine size or other options. You can sometimes disprove the availability of option packages, however. For example, all W-30 and W-31 cars were built in Lansing, so while the VIN from a 1971 or earlier car cannot prove that a car is a factory W-car, it CAN prove that a non-Lansing car is NOT a W-car. And no, there are no records left of what options were on what VIN automobile.

Actually in this case the vin CAN tell you what engine the car was born with - sort of. Your vin begins with '344' which makes it a 442. The ONLY engine available in the 442 in '71 was the 455. No way to determine which 455 without documentation.

Yes, 53 is the color of the body of the car, in your case Saturn Gold. and B is the roof color, black vinyl.

Yes 442 also. I, too, have a documented '71 442 that was code 53 Saturn Gold originally (it was repainted what appears to be code 61 Sandlewood by the PO). My plate indicates 53 53 which is solid color with no Vinyl top.
