A question for 1968 Guru's

Hey all
I'm pulling parts from the 1968 442 parts car I bought. I dropped the gas tank to see if there was a build sheet under it and struck out. But I did find a marking from a blue felt pen that has me wondering. Would this have been like those grease pencil marks added along the assembly line? If so, why would they designate 442 for the gas tank? Did the rally pac use a different sending unit for the gas gauge? If this is a replacement fuel tank it must have been changed a long long time ago so that's why my first thoughts are factory markings. Anybody have any thoughts on it? John

I don't think I've seen blue marker from the factory, but on a one-off basis, you can never say never I suppose. Could have been a bone-yard replacement with markings at some point too I suppose.

The tank itself on a 442 would be the same. The sending unit assembly would be different. Not because of gauges (which were an option, not standard, on both the Cutlass and 442), but because the 442 unit would have the fitting for the return fuel line. Most Cutlasses did not have that...

Thank you 69ho. When I saw the blue ink a wrecking yard was the first thing I thought. But this car has been sitting for a lot of years and I believe still wears the factory shocks. So I thought it likely the tank had never been off before. If nobody has seen something like this then I'll accept its probably a replacement tank.

Years ago I swapped a Cutlass tank under my 1970 442 as gas would splash out the fill tube when I launched hard. But then my gas gauge acted strange. Later I put the original tank back in it and that fixed the gas gauge problem, that's why I guessed the rally pac might have a different sending unit. I didn't know the sending unit was different between the Cutlass and 442. Still learning!!! John
