ECM ECU GURU

I am keen on advice / direction on rechipping an OBD1 puter.
The engine transplant will not have any computer controlled functions . The a/c I will keep under the guise of the puter and I understand that the TH200 4r has the torque converter puter controlled in some sense.I will have no O2 sensor ,egr , cat converters etc . Any non engine puter functions I would be happy to retain.
Anyone in the know on thius stuff. ???
If so, I would appreciate your help .
thanks Mike.

ps ; not against buying a reader /tuner ,handing it to my auto electrician and telling him to sort it out .I looked at tunercat but they only do OBD11(96 and newer basically)

Are you just wanting to be able to lock up thetorque convertor if so there are several companies that make lockup kits. I got one from jegs when I did the motor swap inmy 87 SS. I didn't use the vacumm switch, but installed a switch on the console so I could use it as I wanted.

Depending on the car, the A/C can easily be run without the puter. Usually just a matter of jumpering across a relay or such does this.
What car is in question?

You shouldn't have to put a new chip in the ECM to eliminate the computer controls. Just disconnect it along with all of the sensors. As the others said there are plenty of companies that provide aftermarket switches for TC lockup in the 200 4R.

OK, first, without the TPS on the carb, the MAP sensor, and the distributor feed, the computer will be worthless and will not be able to perform the functions you want.

Joe tx

The carb certainly won`t have TPS - have a rebuilt 67 750 qjet. I want a pertronix setup in the distributor--O4B intake so thats my upgrade option I reckon.A Map as I see it is something women shouldn`t read (in a most respectful manner) SO......
SHOULD I rip the lot out and get a sparkie to do a rewire WITHOUT PUTER or should I get a new puter and have it for selected functions --eg fuel sensor , alternator, etc etc trouble codes.
I am pretty sure the latter option can be done but not here --would have to have it done in the states(eg exatorq in texas) or australia.--but thats not an issue.
I really don`t know .any thoughts ?? tx guys

There really isn't much rewiring required. The fuel/emissions harness is completely separate from the engine and forward lamp harness. It passes through a grommet below the HVAC box. Note that the Check Engine lamp uses a separate driver circuit board and will light up even if you disconnect the computer. Bulb removal fixes that.

As noted, A/C is a simple rewire. Get the throttle switch used on the V6 cars. TCC lockup will require an aftermarket kit or homemade system.

No, if you are removing the original carburetor and plan on using an ealier carburetor without a TPS then there is no reason at all to use a computer.

And that is what the car hobby is all about.
No question is too elementary - as this is the learning process. Keep us informed of your progress on the Caddy!
