Fuel pump

Can anyone tell me what the trick is to installing a new fuel pump in a BB 400. I have not been able to figure out what I am doing wrong! I have a new pump going onto a newly rebuilt motor that has not been run yet.

Make sure the fuel pump LEVER is pointed
up and the outlet[s] are facing up.
you should have a little resistance when
tighting up the top nut.
If you have more resistance than that, you may have to
rotate the engine a little to move the fuel pump eccentric
some. Hope this helps.

Chris, as tru-blue said you need to have the fitting on the top. Here's an engine on a stand that has a good view of the fuel pump. Is this the way you were trying to install it?

Just to be clear, the "fuel pump pushrod" is a Chevy thing. I suspect you are talking about the lever arm on the fuel pump and yes, it goes upward. Bottom line is that an Olds fuel pump is installed the opposite of a Chevy. If you do encounter resistance due to the lever arm hitting the high point on the eccentric, simply push in harder or as noted, rotate the engine 180 deg or so.
