Restoring a set of 66 fender vents right now, and I want to paint them up properly- looking for "correct" guidance.

As I recieved them, one of them had body color paint on the inside sides, and black on the bottom, the other is totally black inside.

Looking at ebay, I see this one that has body color inside & black in the bottom:


Is that right, or should they be all semiflat/satin black inside?

body color on the sides and I used flat black in the bottom just like your picture of the white 442. The all black one may have been a black car or it is wrong.

 

They should be body color on the edges and black at the inside where it faces directly out. The pic you show looks right to me. Hope that makes sense, also hope you like the parts.

 

Cool, I was leaning towards doing that regardless thinking it looked better.

Parts look great! I had paint stripper on them about 15 mins after i got them out of the box to start cleaning them up.

Got the grill rocket repainted, and installed it & the grill saturday.

Still working on the colors for the 442 emblems... Not happy w/ my initial orange & yellow mixes, so will be stripping them again to do over.

I see now what you were talking about with the painted part on the taillight housings. Not perfect as you said, but I'll clean them up & repaint that section again and I think they'll be ok for my needs, at least for 5-6 years until I strip and do the car up right.

what kind of black paint did you use?

I'd like to do front wheel area but not sure what kind of paint to use.

Top, bottom, and sides are body color, and the vertical surfaces are semi-flat black.

Here is info from ROP on the emblems:
To restore the 442 badge I've found three paints that match exactly. All three are Testors Model Master sprays. The first is called Italian Red # 28109, the next is Hugger Orange # 28108, and the last is Grabber Orange #28105. Use an exacto-knife to cut around the numbers after laying down a piece of masking tape. These paints will make your badge look like new. These are a two part spray system and require a clear coat. What I have used with good sucess is Testors Model Masters Chrysler Engine Red, Chevrolet Engine Red and Go Mango with a little yellow to bring the color around.

thanks for the Semi black tip, but can spray paint like Rustoleum or Krylon be used or is there something better made for this area behind the tire? to protect from chipping?

would a clear coat finish add to any look or protection?

You can use Rustoleum 7777 satin black.

I recently used Krylon Rust Tough semi flat black. Very nice durable finish and the semi flat is very similar to the rustoleum satin but dries in 15 mins as apposed to over an hour. I dont like rustoleum because of the long dry time.
