Steel Wheel Paint
Steel Wheel Paint
1966 steel wheels, painted to match the body. Were just the front faces painted the body color, and the rest left a semi-gloss black? Or the entire wheel done in the body color?
Yep, I'm replacing the chrome-reverse aftermarkets on my F-85 with dog dishes on R-code wheels.
Found that paint detail in the Assembly Manual, and do see "Product Information Manual" as the header for the table of contents. Hadn't noticed that before. By any name, it's a wealth of information, and always a good read.
What's interesting is "Back side of the wheel, tire mounting surfaces, and within a three (3) inch radius of the wheel centerline are not to be painted although fogging is permitted." My first Olds, a '72 Cutlass, had full wheel covers, and those wheel areas had black paint, albeit not the gloss black that was on the face. Did steelies come to the paint line in primer?
Also interesting that wheels received synthetic enamel rather than lacquer.

My first 66 Cutlass. Delivery day April 66. Lucerne Mist had dog dish covers. Matching Lucerne Mist on wheels. Two years later it was stolen and recovered but wheels and tires were gone. Spent the rest of its life with me until April 1970 with some black or chrome wheels when I sold it. Dark day, should have never let it go. Very seldom seen factory 4-speed.
