Tire sizes 65 Cutlass

Hi,

I have a 65 Cutlass and looking at going to 15" tires and wanted to know if any issues running BFG Radial TA 275 60 in the rear stock width axle and 7 maybe 8 inch rims. Will I need to clearance anything as seen a few cars with that size in the rear..

Second question what is everyone running in the fronts 235 70's work out as the same height, but wonder if the widths will cause a problem or would 215 75 be a better option?

Thanks for any input

Regards,
Jim

I have run 275/60-15s on a 65 442. They will fit on a GM 15x7 Steel wheel or any 15x7 with zero offset. Had to lightly massage inner wheel house with a couple wacks from a 5 lb. mall but no rolling of anything or any other rubbing.

Stock tires on a 65 were 7.35 x 14, which were just about 26" O.D.
7.75 x 14 tires were optional and had a 26.7" O.D.
235/70-15s are about 28" O.D. and might pose a problem at the front.
235/60-15s are just about the same O.D. as the original 7.35 x 14 tires.

Hi,

Yes I know both tires are 28" looks like both 235 60 or 70 are 9.3 wide, so wonder if the 70's would fit the front, I've seen 215 75 r15 on a 65 which is 27.7 tall x 8.5 wide, which are close.

The idea is having to keep only 1 spare and it would be nice both front and rear being the same height.

All of those running 275's out back what are you running up front?

Regards,
Jim

Hi,

Any rubbing issues?

If not does it appear you can go wider?

Could you post some pictures if you have any available?

Thanks again,
Jim

Makes me wonder if 235/70 R15 might work as .6 taller and .4 wider

Got any pictures?

Regards,
Jim

I am hoping to put 245/60 r15 on the front and 265/60 on the back of my 64. I dont know a lot about tire sizes, but i am curious of why a 70 series up front and a 60 series out back?

Hi,

For a trial fit I put 245/60r14's on my car when I first got it, had saggy springs.

It looked good until I made a sharp turn and pealed the inside of the wheel well molding, luckily I was able to massage it back in shape.

The way the fenders are shaped there isn't a lot of room for a wide front tire,, I had heard anything over a 235/60r15 up front might rub,, so hence the thinking of using a 235/70 r15 as both are the same width (9.3") vs 245/60r15 which is 9.6 wide.

Regards,
Jim

my 66 had 275/60-15 all the way around when I got it. No issues at all.

it looks a little different now with a 20” in the back and 18” up front, and a little bit of a drop. Not every one’s cup of tea I know...

The 65 wheel wells are not even close to the 66 and 67 cars. Shapes are different especially in the rear. Not as round as the later cars.

my bad. I was thinking 65-66 were same, not 66-67. Just ignore me being irrelevant.
