Moving up to 15 in...they look to big.Advice

Last Christmas the wife gave me a gift certificate for new tires. I went to the dealer and found the tire I wanted...it looks too tall for my 64 dynamic 88. So before I get the final purchase he is where I stand, I currently have
215-75-14 and want to put on 225-75-15. They look like they will hit the wheel well...is this just an illusion or do I have a point. I could go to a 215-75-15 but those look almost like my current 14's.
Am I loosing my mind or is this a concern I should have

your 215 75 14s are 26.7" tall & you want to go to 225 75 15s which are 28.3" tall. That is a HUGE jump in tire height & may cause you grief.

I would suggest the 225 70 15 tire which is 27.4" tall. This should work out well.

Use this calculator to determine tire heights.

Your 1964 Dynamic 88 came with 800x14 bias ply tires that had a diameter of 27.58"
Therefore, your current 215-75-14 are actually almost an inch shorter than what was on your car originally. If you go with 215-75-15, they will be 27.7" tall which is very close to the original tire specs. If you go to the 225-75-15, they are 28.3" tall. Those would likely work as well. I have these on my 1968 Delta 88.
You could also get some 70 series radials that would be wider than the 75 series tires but you may have difficulty in getting whitewalls.

White walls are important to me so I will stick with the 75. I am sanding and priming the rims in preperation for the new 15's. so whats the verdict are the 225-75-15 too big...some think so.

The only thing I would suggest is to measure the opening and see.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, the standard tire was 800x14 bias ply.
850x14 were an option for your car. Furthermore, if your car was equipped with factory air conditioning, it automatically came with the 850x14 tires. These tires would have been 28.1" tall. The 225-75-15radials are 28.3" tall so you would have no problem and I would also suggest a better look and ride for your car.
My father had a 64 Dynamic 88 that he bought new and it had 850x14 tires. My father taught me how to drive with that car in 1967 so I have wonderful memories of that beautiful car!
Glad you want to keep whitewalls on your car.

UPDATE...Every time I had planned on new 15in tires on the 1964 dynamic 88 something came up....front end work being needed....starter issue......fuel pump issue....tuition bill needed to be paid...medical bills...
I even purchased tires for the dynamic but gave then to my son for his car YIKES.

I finally put it all together; new rims, new 15 inch tires..had them balanced. The tires that came off the 64 oldsmobile were 11 to 15 years old and worn.
Holy moly what a great ride ...quiet, smooth no vibration and after a great alignment straight as an arrow.
I have to use restraint because the car truly wants to push the 100mph mark. It feels so secure but I realize its a 50 year old cabin cruiser. I got to be careful. A blast to drive on those backroads.
Thanks for all the advise on tire size, brands and what will and won't work on my car. Thanks

Happy to hear that it worked out so well for you. The 64 Dynamic 88 has a special meaning to me. My Dad's was a Dark Green 4 dr Hardtop with a beige interior. The first car that I drove. And yes, it was pretty quick for a big car! Enjoy your car and take care of it.

215 75 15 white walls Hankook. Quiet/great on rough roads. I expected an improvement just with a better tire, I din't expect such a great ride.
I have put a lot of time and money into it getting to this point..1.Complete front end work, new shocks. 2. found a great mech to get the front end aligned to manufacturer specs. 3 Had tires balanced using a road pressure balancer. 4. sanded primed and painted rims. Rims were only 8 years old. The 14 inch rims I replaced were original and sure looked it.

The original tires on your car were 8.00-14, which would have been 27.5" in diameter. The optional oversize tires were 8.50-14 (just over 28" dia) and the optional 15" tires were 7.60-15 (28.6" dia).

The bottom line is that your old 215/75-14s were grossly undersized. 225/75-15s are 28.2" and 215/75-15s are 27.7".

Congrats on the tire choice and all work you put into it. Let's see a pic of that great Dynamic. I'm running Hanooks on my '64 and love the ride.

And a pic of those 14" rims would be good too since I may a recipient.
