Hey all,

Bought this car a year ago (76 cutlass salon) - it had a few problems and I've been working on it a lot - finally got to a point where its driveable but noticed vibration at ~65. Jacked up front left tire, had quite a bit of motion when man handling the tire in/out from top/bottom. Anyway, noticed lug nuts very loose. Tried to tighten them but one just spins and spins once it gets to the pressure against the rim.

Is the lug nut case spinning, or could it be the rotor stud? (I believe the lug nuts are original but I suppose they could be aftermarket.

Switch it with one of the other lug nuts. That should tell your if the lug nut or the stud is stripped.

 

A couple of things come to mind.

If the wheel has been loose for some time the holes might be worn out and not fixable. Replace wheel.

The stud could be loose on its splines in which a zap with a mig welder might keep you going for the time being. Also might be problematic at a later time down the road.

 

Thanks - not sure how long its been like this - car not driven much - hopefully wheel is ok as they are painted body color so it would be a PITA to replace. I tried swapping lug nuts and I think maybe I ruined a second stud with that lug nut - not sure but now can't get two lug nuts to tighten up.

Anyway, looks like I need to at least order some studs and lug nuts. thanks all!
