Wow,where do I start, Well this is what happens when your car is trying to tell you something and you ignore it because your lazy and or naive

I was heading to work at 7am on the hwy, clunk clunk clunk, seems like a have a flat, well not quite, ive had the same sound for a couple days or so and my tire is fine, well im just gona ignore it for now untill tommorow when i get to work on my car.Im driving on the hwy and boom,ok my tire just went out, Let me try to control the car, good thing im on the right shoulder of the hwy. Okay well at least I wasnt on the left lane and it wasnt a rear tire that went out. Well now that I safely pulled over, let me get out and take a look at the tire.....

Great so I have ruined my perfectly great looking 3 piece deep dish aluminum rim.So I am out $67 for towing,2 hours work and a brake rotor because the flucking lug nuts came loose. Oh and my rim which will be a bitch to replace or find another one!

Sorry to here about this. That's why you have to make sure you have the right lug nuts. Always tighten your lug nuts after you have driven a few miles on them. It could have been a lot worse. Then the wheel getting torn up.

Think about the good part of this experience, nobody got hurt. Lug nuts are easly forgotton, once the new wheel is installed eveyone assumes things are grand. I have found you cannot trust tire stores with their rattle wrenches. You need to watch them do the install and make sure they use the right lug nuts and torque wrench to spec's when installling your tires. If you can't be there because of work then take the car straight home and do it yourself. Then a few says later re-torque as stated above

The other thing is, check your lug nuts a couple times a year for safety sake.

Also note that over torquing can stress the lugs causing them to fail at a later date or break when you try to remove the lug nuts at a later date. Another reason not to rattle wrench them.

Lug nuts and the rotor may easily be forgoten but not the rim, oh well hopefully i find another spare for cheap.

Sorry to hear it
That happened to me in my truck a few years ago. I have been told that Aluminum rims tend to have the lug nuts loosen up within a few hundred miles of a rotation (could've told me sooner).
I did not check them, my rear tire, a 285 65R16, which is big and heavy, BTW, rolled down the road at about 25-30 miles per hour and hit an oncoming car driven by an older lady.
It tore up her car pretty good. Good thing I have four wheel drive...I locked them in and drove off the road....tore up the road too.

Dang.....
Sorry to hear about your misfortune!
I never would have guessed that just loose lugnuts could cause this. Makes me wonder if the lugs were overstressed some time before by over torquing.
I have heard that deeply dished wheels can help stress the lug studs - fact or fiction?

So was the rim dragged a long way like that? I would have thought the wheel would have went its separate way.
Crap!! I hope you find a new rim - that one looks pretty cool.
Glad no accident or injury occured. Kinda reminds me of when one of my upper A-arm bolts broke last year... They are easy to overstress by bad alignment techs.
A rotor and rim - hopefully that is all!

This brings up another good point. The studs after 40 years of wear and tear. I would replace them on all 4 wheels. They might be part of the reason the lug nuts came loose. The threads deteriorate over time. Between being tighten time and time again and age. I would replace them.

All good points, Im pretty sure that it was a combination of old lug bolts and old lug nuts that where probably loose might I add but most importantly the fact that I ignored it eventhough I knew it wasnt right.Oh well this will teach me not to overlook the obvious.

It could also be that the lugnuts were going anyway because the other rim is still on tight and never came loose.

Lady- I was also suprised to see the wheel held on and dragged along the way,but after looking at it I see why it held on, the car leaned on that side and tucked the rim under the fender while the rotor pinned the inside lip of the rim holding it in place, good thing it didnt wonder onto the hwy. These rims are aluminum so the half broken lug bolts graded the lug base of the rim like cheese which ruined the ability to remount the rim. The rims is straight and still looks great but that doesnt matter if the mounting base is ruined.

Bummer man.
The fender bent from that too?
Don't look too bad.

I had a lower ball joint break on a '62 Buhog Special and the wheel tucked underneath.
Drove it home like that and made some nice grooves in the road with the wheel.
I had a police escort behind me too, they were laughing their butts off.

In the CSM it says there can't be paint on the wheel or hub mounting surface or the lug nuts can loosen.

Yeah my fender did crease alittle, what a drag, making body dents on one of my cars is the thing I hate the most.<there was no paint on the hub surface or lug channels, but oh well

Might try taking the rim to a machine shop that works with aluminum. might be able to weld in new metal then re-machine the lug surface. Never know until you ask.

I had these rims on my fully loaded 93 lti trans am before so yeah i think they could handle the load, looks like the stock rotors couldnt handle the wheels. weak and strong dont go together i guess, time to upgrade!

Citcap- The rim is far gone Im not gona try to fix it,its too far gone, plus i wouldnt feel comfortable riding on a repaired rim, would you?
