Does anyone know how the stock bracket with wing nut to hold the jack in place on a 1968 Cutlass S was secured to the floor of the trunk? Was it bolts and nuts that went right through the floor or self tapping screws, anyone know? Thanks....Todd

 

Mine has a welded loop for the threaded hook to go into. Looks something like this:

Does your car have SS wheels or steelies?

it was probably originally had steelies but i really cannot verify for sure.

 

Well the pic that Alan put up would have the same type of bracket no matter what car was built IIRC. The difference is that SS wheels would have a shorter hook thread that was used with a special lock down nut. Also the jack handle would have 2 clips that hold the handle in place - on the sloped edge just inside the trunk.

If you have something other than what Alan posted in his pic, someone may have replaced the floor pan and not installed the hook bracket properly?

 

yes i knew about the difference as far as the nut and clips for the jack handle if ss rims. i guess i will just use two bolts to hold down the bracket.

 

I'd be really careful about that. Have a look under your car and see what's directly under the hook latch on the trunk floor. Hint: rhymes with gas tank. Be safe; can you stop by a muffler shop or something and just have them tack weld the latch in for you? MUCH safer.

 

The bracket actually has two holes for where it is supposed to be attached. It is just to the right of the gas tank I've already looked. Thanks for the heads up though, two heads are always better than one.

Alan, it showed up on the 16 for me. Just for some reason it wasn't showing on the 15th.
