The car is nice, too bad about the color.
It's the basic throw some 442 emblems and grill on a wagon or Vista Cruiser and say it's just what the factory would of done if they would of made a 442 deal.

My first car was also a Faux-Four-Two wagon. I inherited the family's 68 Vista and promptly installed a 442 grille and emblems (this was 1974 - you could buy those parts brand new from Olds). The 425 came a little later.

 

the name dropper here...someone actually told me they made a couple of 442 wagon pace cars. i didn't know if they were jerking my chain so i was covering my bases. no, i don't think joe walks on water but am convinced in my reading of all Olds sites he's a good man to ask when questions arise.


. by the way, the winning bidder will get a big block for 71-72 yrs, maybe then you'd be more persuaded of the way Lansing may have made one.

Nice wagon, but in my opinion, a couple of emblems does not make a 442!

In the mid '70's I put together a '65 Chevelle 2-dr wagon with a 396, T-400, and a 3:55 12-bolt, and copied a F-41 suspension. Mid 12's and my street driver, but never thought of telling anyone it was a "Z-16 Wagon", although I'd installed buckets and a floor shifter!
It was even green, when I bought it!

 

thanks, point taken, but please don't read more into my effort to sell my wagon than is there. i am clearly not presenting it as a true 442 car. would you be more in agreement if i had said, "if olds made a 72 442 wagon, the exterior might appear much like the outside of my car appears"? is there any literary license leeway out there or just some folks who seem slightly hypercritical and overly technical. 65 Z16s were a rare breed, 72 442s w/350s were not; that's apples and oranges from my vantage point. i am not trying to rip anyone off, not looking for some 1st timer to sting, just having fun w/ another fine oldsmobile...sorry if you think i misrepresented the car in ANY way

Note that it's not a "442 wagon", just a VC with paint and decals. Same thing with the 72 H/O wagons - stock Vistas with decals. These were used by medical and press personnel at the track. There's more info and photos in this thread:

Putting 442 emblems on a wagon is double edged sword especially in my case.
Usually I always felt a clone should go all the way or not at all, at least thats how I looked at it until I was faced with the cost on my own project.
Real Olds guys are not fooled easily I know this.
When the viewing public saw my Cutlass wagon when it was stock as predicted everyone ALWAYS said, "You should put 442 on it".

There are three types of people to impress with a clone 442 wagon..
Real Olds car guys,[An expencive route with all the details it takes to impress]Then there's the general public turned on by a simple badge,[easiest and least expencive with the broadest audience] and then there is yourself, the owner of the car.[ The only one that matters]

Personally his wagon on ebay gave me the best opportunity to decide if I want to see 442 badges on my fenders.
I was going to keep without fender badges but now I think I may just go for it or at least attach them with magnets.
I prefered to truely clone it but I already spent WAY too much money so I have to stop with BIG purchases on this project.

I would prefer a 455,.. a his/hers Hurst shifter with console, Tic Toc Tac W-30 red fender wells with 442 and W-30 badges on the fenders. I have the W-25 Hood already but not yet installed.
Unfortunatley I can't afford all those things.

Before I cloned my wagon I used to see Coupe clones at cruise nights go without any badges on fenders and I always felt imho it didn't look correct without fender 442 badges but I never said anything to owners at cruise events because I'm sure to them it looks good.
With that said I may put 442 on my fenders regardless if Olds guys recognize 442 slapped on a fender.
The money I spent on this restoration I could have bought a genuine 442. But this is MY wagon because I did the work and I love it. And I'm impressed with it.
I didn't take anything anyone said here seriously. Just my 2 cents

Technically, any of these wagons wouldn't qualify as a clone! What are they cloned after? a "real" 442 wagon! They didn't exist! So I say, "have at it guys"! Your cars would still be the most interesting at a cruise night!

 

That is a nice station wagon. Hopefully he doesn't have his reserve set too high, the economy is still pretty lousy for selling a classic car.

 

Homestar: Very nice LongTop! Bet that sucker stops 'em in their tracks driving down the road, and at the local cruise nights. Very nice job, and be proud of her!

I would love to do one up like this. Talk about unique! Excellent job Homestar. Olds should have built those. For the young guy with a family, it would let you have your cake, and eat it too.

 

I would love to own a wagon! I think it would be cool, both of these wagons look good in my opinion and I would love to be driving one of them. Maybe someday....

 

I grew up in wagons - unfortunately not Olds. I would love to have one but the wife isn't so eager. The nice thing is they are big enough to live in so I could just show up with one and see where it goes!!

Homestar, I love yours. That it one of the sharpest looking wagons I have seen. Love the colour, stripes and the hotwheels logo.

Beautiful wagon Homestar. I always thought it would be neat to do a Rallye 350 wagon or convertible. I have never seen one.

 

I remeber, back in June of 1988 (Oldsmobile Nationals in New Jersey) seeing an orange 1970 W-30 wagon clone.
Asking $20 grand for it back then!

Likely the same one that Oldsmobile had put together, It's actually Rallye Red aka orange. Legends have it that they had only made one, and was featured in Road and Track magazine in the March 1970 issue. Of course I have a couple of copies for the archives. It can usually be seen on Rebay by typing in "442 Wagon". Or later this summer in my garage in a slightly more appropriate color, but with an equal attitude.

There were at least two different hi-po wagons that were hand assembled by Olds and that made the magazine rounds. The first was a 1968 Vista Cruiser with a Hurst/Olds drivetrain (including the under-bumper scoops) and suspension. This car was publicized by Car and Driver as "Son of Boss Wagon" (Boss Wagon the first was a 1966 Plymouth). The second was the 1970 flattop discussed above.

 

If you only knew.
Choosing the color was the hardest thing ever.
I went to many cruise nights to find a color to influence my decision and I didn't prefer any of them for this particular wagon.
Then I saw a Yellow 2004 VW beetle drive by and I said, There it is!
After months of looking at other cars contemplateing other shades of yellow I kept going back to that Beetle. Its the only car that uses that shade. BTW This yellow fades very fast and loses its luster quickly if left out in the sun for too long. So she stays covered.

Homestar, beautiful wagon & nice job on it! I have had 4 vistas, but no long tops...yet.
Some of you may have seen my car on ROP, but it is my take of what a '70 Vista Cruiser SX would have looked like. It has a real oai hood, moderately built 455, 200 4 r trans, 4:10 posi with rear discs, buckets, console, Rallye pack, safety sentinel speedo, hood lock, am-fm with front & rear speaker, courtesy light package, & optional rear seat shoulder belts. I started with an Arizona car about 15 years ago that was very clean, but had a sun burned interior. All the interior is now new & the rear seat pattern matches the front buckets.
Oops, Just noticed in the first picture not all the trim was not on yet. It is now.

I had fender emblems on mine. Didn't really matter. People think they are a Chevelle anyway. Who has not hear "Does it still have a 442 in it?"
Some one might find my old Vista cruiser and have a few questions about 442 wagons. It was a pretty good one of none ever made. I would love to have it back again. I traded it for a Black Trans Am...

In 1985 I found a wrecked 1970 442 w-30 car with out a motor. It had been hit in the rear so I got the dog house with hood and the bucket seats, console, all gauges and trim on the dash ect. Oh my VC and the wrecked car were both green on green. I hated the green. I had a lot of fun with that car. It was a 455 car and many a hot rod fell victim to Rocket power. It was hard to explain getting beat by a wagon...
