Ok. I’m really tired of the “catch” in the steering gear on my 55 Super 88. I used to have an excessive amount of play in the steering wheel turning up to a half a rotation with no effect on the front tires. I tightened the screw on the top of the steering gear and found some improvement. But there is still a “catch” at a certain place when the steering wheel is turned. By “catch” I mean when smoothly turning the steering wheel, there is a place that requires extra effort to continue turning the wheel. The extra effort releases the “catch” and normal steering is returned until that spot is encountered again.
My mechanic thinks that one of the ***** in the ball return guides has a flat spot causing the hiccup in the smoothness of the steering. He doesn’t believe that that is a serviceable part. I checked with Fusick who offer a rebuild kit that does not include the ***** or the guides. The kit only includes gaskets, o-rings, and seals. They do offer a rebuild service but it doesn’t look like that would include the ball nut assembly. And all the parts are out of stock, anyway.
Any guidance on this situation would be appreciated.

Does the catch repeat in the same spot or various spots? The catch could be in the steering/suspension linkages and joints vs the gearbox, may want to separate the two and test.

Try loosening the adjustment on the box to test if the catch changes.

 

Thanks. I hadn’t thought of that. I will loosen that up several turns and try it. If the catch goes away, where should I look next?

 

If loosening/allowing more freeplay reduces the catching the problem is inside the box.
