48 Olds steering box outer tube removal

How do I remove the outer tubing from the steering box? I have the steering wheel and all of the parts off the top. Is the tube pressed in or does the box have to come apart to unbolt this tube? Thanks to all for any help!!

That "tube" is part of the steering box . It can't be removed .
Here is an illustration to show you how it all goes together ;

steering tube

This tube must be either welded or pressed into the steering box. I need to get it off in order to modify the shaft to u-joints for header clearance. I guess I will just cut it off and go from there. Thank you for the replies!!

That idea isn't going to work either . This box was built to work as one unit .
A better idea would be to get a steering box from a sixties or seventies GM car . Then build your own column with all the u-joints you need .
