did you completely bleed the system?

if so, the gear could be bad

If you have not done this yet, try turning the steering wheel all the way side to side a few times. (Easier to do if you have the front wheels off the ground) That should get rid of all the air in the system. If you still have the issue, then you could try backing off the adjustment screw on the top of the box to see if that helps.

Yep, it sounds like they gave you a junk box. Hope they honor the deal with a free replacement.

I used a 90's Jeep box in my 65 Chev and it works better than any I've had before.

I wonder if that swap would work on an Olds?

It'll bolt right up. I had to buy an aftermarket rag joint and a high pressure hose from a 80 Camaro and flare one fitting. It's under 3 turns lock to lock.

You need to center the steering box then adjust the tie rods so the tires are straight.
Turn the steering wheel back and forth and find the center. Look and see where the tires are pointing, they should be straight. If they are turning to the right you need to adjust your tie rods to make them straight.

I've thought about getting the following tool so I can do my own alignments:
