54 88 Won't idle

I hadn't started the ole boy for a few days and today I went out and fired it up and it ran for 20 seconds and stalled out.
As long as I give it pedal it stays running but when I remove my foot it stalls .
I had my lady start it and if I put my hand over the primary side of the bowl and regulate air flow and work the choke flap it runs but the second o remove my hand it stalls out.
I have a shop manual and have been reading about the 4GC Rochester but I'm kinda stumped.
Any help would be helpful.

The first thing I would check for is vacuum leaks. The 4GC Rochester is pretty easy to rebuild and is a good carb. Put a vacuum gauge on it and see what kind of reading you have. It should be 15 " or more and a steady reading.

The 20 seconds it was running was the choke closed? Like during warm up?

It could be a lot of things. Be sure the ignition system is up to par. Then consider doing a rebuild on the carburetor. The Rochesters are not so difficult once you understand the principles of operation. Just be sure to pay attention to details. The shop manual is a good start.
