Thank you everyone for the help and wisdom you’ve given me over the past months. Taking the 1949 Olds 88 from a “looker” to a driver has been a big undertaking. Floor and body restoration, exhaust system, trans service, ignition (distributor, wires, starter), front main seal, oil pan seals, am radio rebuild, clock restoration, hydraulic to 6v power top conversion, snd lots more… you made today’s drive possible and it was pure joy! Averaging 13mpg which I think is incredible for mixed town and highway driving. Still waiting on a set of tires (ordered those in DECEMBER). The Coker classics on here now are about 20 years old and as balanced as Easter eggs! Haha. Just thought I’d share some pics of when it all goes right!
That is a very nice car. I love the picture by the ocean. About ten years ago I sold a red 50 Olds 88 convertible that was in an estate I was executor of. My 54 came out of that same estate. I have attached a couple pictures of it right after I had a new top put on it right before I consigned it to a dealer that sold it for me. Enjoy your car.
Damn that's beautiful !! I agree with all the other posters I love the color combo !!! Job well done !! as you can tell from my avatar I may be a little partial to green , that red Olds is a beauty too it would have been real hard for me to part with that !! enjoy your beautiful ride !!!
Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I put another 3hr drive on it today. About 1.5 hrs each way to a restaurant that turned out to be closed. At least the drive was fun! Mixed back road and highway. Speedo is accurate up to 50, then it starts to get inaccurate. 65mph on the speedometer is actually just 55. That means miles are piling up faster than actual. 16mpg today but that’s not true I suppose if it didn’t actually travel that far/fast.
no matter what, I’m blessed to have it. It’s a true joy to drive. Can’t wait for tires that are round! Ha!!
Glad you're enjoying the car, but I'd go easy on the long highway/freeway trips until your new tires arrive. Twenty-year-old tires shaped like eggs are probably not safe at any speed, let alone on the freeway. I'd hate to hear about the car (or worse you or one of your family) getting damaged in a high-speed blowout.

great advice. “You got to know when to hold em…”
it’s easy to get caught up in the freedom!
Not that you should be driving on 23-year-old tires, but if bias ply, they may get better(rounder) with age and miles. Like you, I would be looking forward to a new set..Tedd
