Not sure of the color yet. The car was originally mist gray and baltic blue.

That sounds like a really nice color combo. I'd restore it to its original finish.

Brings back memories of childhood. I came home from hospital in 1956 in a 1953 Ninety Eight sedan. Folks kept it till 1960. Black with same blue seat toppers.

Question: why is the air cleaner so tall? My batwing cover sits down over the oil bath (mine is a 55s88.).

Very nice looking car. Looks mostly complete. Nice to see a project like this starting with a very solid looking car.

That is one beautiful car. I went to your profile but I don't see a photo album. My request: everyone who has been remiss in uploading pictures please, please do ... I love to look at these beautiful cars!

I pulled up those seat covers the other day to air out the interior and found a note lodged under the seat from who knows what year...it looked old though. It was a handwritten note from the vet informing the former owner that he was making his rounds out in the country so she could just leave her dog in the kennel out back of the shop. That certainly would explain the incredible amount of dog hair I found under the seat covers!! Other than that I found a 1944 wheat penny.

Another train of thought...I'm debating on swapping drum brakes for disc. Any advice?

To Rocketdownunder...that's a really nice car you have there. I'm curious about your suspension to get that low profile. What modifications were made?

I see what you mean about setting tall. Here's my 56 S88.

I don't know what to say...., it's the oil bath that came with the car. Dad was not the kind of guy to change something like that. And there doesn't appear to be hood clearance for something taller like in the picture CR*71 posted. I agree with 55miketn, the one on the 53 looks taller.

I haven't really thought about my air cleaner sitting "high" since it's the same style I've seen on other '53s and some cadillacs. It's the original oil-bath cleaner that came with the car. If you get rid of the oil bath component and simply use the top batwing, then it will sit lower. I know some folks have done that and simply put an aftermarket air filter inside the housing to keep the batwing look. I'm staying with stock for now.

This past week I removed the old interior and cleaned up the floor. I'm really lucky as this car is very solid. Now on to rebuilding the brakes!

Found this on the web, looks the same. There is black paint showing on the entire bottom piece, so maybe it didn't slide into the upper portion the same way the later ones did?

That is strange...I never realized they were different...I'm running the oil bath in my '55 and it looks like the photo below of the 56 S-88

CR*71, you should look at my thread on the "Under Floor Power Brakes - '55 Olds" since you're at the stage you are with yours.

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...1955-olds.html

I'm not 100% completed, but I'm cautiously optimistic of success.

I've definitely been following your thread on brakes Olds Dad. Like you, I want to keep the under floor MC, but I haven't decided whether to keep the drums or go with disc brakes. I'm glad you are posting lots of pics and discussion, because it's a great reference for me and I'm sure others as well.

Thats the way i bought it, i think the front coils were just cut, but the back was even lower than that pic, it had 4 inch lowering blocks in it the car would not fit up my driveway so i got them out and had the rear leafs redone as low as i could go without using lowering blocks, still looks cool but i will probably bag it down the track.

Did a little exploratory research under the dash before I start replacing all the old wires with new cloth-covered ones. I was also curious about the 3 floor switches...I knew two were for the lights (including the autronic eye), but upon tracing the other I found that it led to the Super Deluxe radio. So I confirmed that it is indeed a floor switch for the radio...pretty cool!
