Original engine for an F37?
There may be a thread or service on the site where somebody has listed engine displacements by model and year - if so, let me know where please. I'm still finding my way around the site.
OK, My F37 (I believe it's an F37 from photos of that model that I've seen) has a 216 side valve six enge (painted green) serial numer 410977-1
The site http://classiccardatabase.com/specs.php reckons that 1937 Oldsmobile six cylinder angine was a 229.7 ci unit, and the 216 didn't arrive until 1939.
Questions Can anyone tell me what year 410977-1 relates to (and if it's even an Oldsmobile engine and not some other manufacturer's 6 cyclinder 216 motor)

A 216 sounds like a Chevrolet six, but those were OHV engines where Olds were flatheads. Not sure what GM Australia were doing back then as far as engines, but you may have an export engine. Did GM Australia build the cars in Oz as they did Holdens, or were they imported as CKD (crated knocked down) and assembled there?
The Standard Catalog of Oldsmobile indicates that the 1937 Olds six was indeed a 230 cid unit, with displacement upped from the 1936 213 cid unit by a 1/8" increase in bore size.
On engine numbers: The SCO indicates six cylinder engine numbers ranged from 670001 at start of 1937 production thru 818948 at end of production.
1936 numbers are 506001 thru 670000. The book doesn't show them before then, but sounds like you may have an earlier 213 engine. I believe those engines had OLDSMOBILE cast into the block.
SCO shows 215 cid six used in 1939 F (Series 60) only with starting engine # of 905001, back to the 230 in all lines 1940, and started using the 238 in 1941

RocketTrader Thanks for the advice. The head has "216" stamped near the front, "GM" stamped near the back, and the engine number itself in the middle.
I tried in vain to attach some pictures, my time expired and I was logged out - so I'm typing this again and you'll just have to take my word for what the head looks like :=)
As for Olds vehicles in Oz. I believe that the cars were imported as CKD and assembled by Holdens Motor Works and sold as Old, Chev etc (the first actual Holden wasn't built until 1948)
Holden converted to Right Hand Drive, and made as few a number of changes as possible. So the only door with a key is what would be the drivers side on an LHD car but which is now the passenger side on a RHD car. There's a little badge on the side of the vehicle saying "Body by Holden" or similar.
OK, if I ever master the attachments, I'll post them separately. For now I'll just send the text.....

1937 F-37 had a 230 ci engine originally. 3 7/16 x 4 1/8 bore & stroke rated at 95 HP
Engine displacements jumped up & down between the mid 1930's and 1949 when the Big Six was 257 ci, the same as the L-8.
I own and drive a 1937 L-37 as well as our 62 Starfire conv.
