Mating a Hydramatic to a Gen I Olds Engine

I just completed this. I have done this a few times, so I thought I would document my method. Pretty simple, alignment is the key.

Torque Flywheel to 70 ft lbs, make sure mating surface is clean, note small grooves that should be clean, use a wire wheel and brake clean.

I used a furniture dolly and an engine hoist. I also used an engine leveler. Match the angle of the transmission with the engine leveler.

Now spin the torus dowel pins to line up with the flywheel. You will see groups of 3 holes at 180 deg on each side of the flywheel.

I use aviation permatex. Coat the whole sealing surface of the torus, let it air dry for a few minutes.

Apply the gasket, it should easily stick now and stay in place. I coat this gasket surface now also with aviation permatex.

Lift the engine until it clears the torus, slide the transmission into position, leave an ince gap or so, lower the engine back down over the torus until bell housing dowel pins are at the right level.

Slide transmission into place on the bell housing dowel pins. Snug up the top 2 bell housing bolts. If you aligned the torus and flywheel in the step earlier, it should already be mated up now.

Notice the torus dowel pin in the middle of the 3 holes? You are ready to start installed torus to flywheel bolts.

There are 30 bolts! I put a dab of aviation permatex on each bolt. I do about 8 bolts at a time, use a ratcheting 9/16 box end wrench. You cant get a socket in there. Rotate engine at the front with a 3/4 socket 90 degrees. Then do another 8 bolts. Keep going until you get them all. Just hand tightening them all. You will need to make 1 more pass at all the bolts, 35 ft lbs. I couldn't get a torque wrench in there so I estimated the torque. If you tighten until the engine turns that's close.

All done!
All Install top four (4) bell housing bolts (of course the 2 were already there at the top from the previous step.

Install the lower bell housing now, 5 short bolts, 1 long one by the starter.
