Engine is at the machine shop as of around 4pm today and I’ve been toying with the idea of taking the body off the frame of my 55’ olds 98’, anyone ever do this? I don’t have an automotive lift, can it be done a different way? I have plenty of room in my garage and it sure would make it easy to clean up the frame, run new brake lines/fuel lines etc.

 

You can do it, one end at a time, with an engine hoist. Put the body on tall jackstands, with 4 x 4's across the tops. You'll probably have to pull the wheels off the chassis and drag it out from under, unless you've got seriously tall jackstands.

 

I pulled the body off a Super 88. Bought set of 12 ton jack stands, 2 jacks and the help of my angled driveway!

 

Hopefully over my Christmas break I can get the body off the frame, pictures to come

 

After 8 months of “I’ll get around to it”,it finally happened, no where near as difficult as I thought it was going to be.

 

Nice job! Yeah once you start it goes pretty easy. There is always that one last body bolt that is a pain to get loose!

 

Oddly enough, the difficult bolts to get to came out easily and the ones easy to get to, the heads snapped off as soon as I applied light pressure.

 

If you intend to put dual exhaust on your car this would be the perfect time to do the cutouts on the left side of the X member. Just mirror the right side.

 

Finally back on the wheels!! what a job, feels good to be this much closer to having the body back on, next few weeks I should have the engine/trans installed then the body will go back on hopefully before winter. (After i drill out 3 broken bolts). The pre-bent brake and fuel kit from inline-tube which was installed after this was taken was a breeze.
