Frame Off

Has anyone personally done a frame off themselves? If so was it very difficult to remove from the frame. I have 72 442 and have done a replacement of the quarter panels and the trunk. Also if you did the remove the frame did you build body dolley or buy one

thanks Gary

I did a frame off in my drive way. I raised the body up enough with regular floor jacks to slide 4X4s under the body at the front and rear and then I used those big farm jacks to raise the body enough to roll the frame out from under the body. As I raised the body I was supporting it with building blocks by moving it up enough to put one block in the rear, then one block in the front till I had stepped it up high enough to get the frame out. Once the frame was out I put additional blocks in the middle of the 4X4,s for added support while I worked underneath it. I already had the new frame ready in the garage so as soon as I had the floorpanels done and painted I just rolled the new frame under it and lowered the body onto it. Took about a week and you need three or four guys while raising and lowering the body, two guys for the jacks, one safety observer and maybe a guy to help steady the body while it goes up/down. I think there is a picture of it here on the board some where so check other threads that I have posted to to see them. Wow! That was very imaginative. Never would have thought to do it that way. A friend of mine suggested that I build a body dolly and get about 4 or five other friends to help lift it off. He said that he had built a body dolly out of 2x4's also using caster wheels. I think I will use angle iron to build oneI want to sand blast the frame which I had done much of it already by jacking the car up high and painting it with Por 15,but I cant get all the places I need to get to. I have also purchased a body bushing kit. I think seeing what you did is giving me inspiration to remove the body.
thanks

Iv'e got the ongoing 66 on the lift but also recently picked up a 64 GTO project and it came with a simple 4 x 4 and 2 x 4 roll around cart the other owner made.

Letting some air out of the tires makes it easier to get the frame out w/o jacking it up too high

Like the snow tires
