56 Gas tank

Hey guys. My 98 has a big dent in the bottom of the gas tank and I wanted to change the sending unit so I decided to just buy a new tank at the same time. I bought the one from Fusick. It just came today and I was wondering what the original tank was coated with. Should I paint it with just black paint or was it undercoated with something? Was the top done too or just the bottom? Thanks!!

I'm not sue about from the factory but I coated the inside of my tank with this:

When I had finished the inside of the tank I coated the outside with this:

It turned out great!

From the factory I don't think they were coated with anything unless a dealer applied undercoating was used on the whole undercarriage which was common in that era..... Tedd

If it were mine, I would spray it with some clear lacquer.

Thanks everyone!

Red, I'm going to do just that per your suggestion. Thanks!

My 56 was never undercoated. BUT, I did have the tank removed and boiled four years ago. I'm not bright enough to remember if it was undercoated before that, but it's undercoated now. The straps are not undercoated, so I think the tank was originally not undercoated.

In any event, I concur that you should spray it for protection.

Probably a good idea but just think about it, it lasted 60 years as it left the factory, that will be plenty of time for me..... Tedd

Probably no question that it will outlast most of us, especially me and you Tedd. My point in clear coating it was to keep it looking new. Of course I doubt the Chinese made replacement tank will last as long as the original.

My very original car has undercoating. I'm not sure if it was factory or dealer. My guess would be dealer. The inside of the front fenders had gaps, and the tops of the headlight buckets were missed.

Anyway, the bottom of the tank has undercoating, and around the sides, but not on the top, or on the underside of the body where the tank is. This also leads me to think it was the dealer.
