49 303 teardown
I have a 303 out of a '49 88. Its locked up tight. The hydramatic is still on. I pulled the heads off and even the timing gear and it still won't turn after using marvel mystery oil before taking anything apart. I want to use the engine in an s-10. The only thing I can think of doing now is to pull the rod caps off to try and knock the pistons out.

You might try a 50/50 mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid.
That is really an unusual engine for an S-10. I will be surprised if it will fit. This is a case where a SBC would be a better engine since you can buy all the mounts and adapters.

Yea its going to to take some work to get it to bolt in. Its more a rat/hot rod truck though there is a lot of mods on it.rat because its a lot of different parts but it all going to be painted and finished not all rusty. I want to use the 303 because everyone just bolts in a sbc.

Yes, number the rod caps then remove them, then drive the pistons out of the top, in chunks if you have to. Remove timing set, torus and crank should now spin, now remove torus cover bolts allowing separation of engine and trans. Don't beat the crankshaft surfaces up, and try not to drive on big end of rods. Your 1949 rods are rifle drilled if original, 1949 only, don't bash the oiling holes. Take clear pics of front crank seal, 1949 used two types both hard to get, you need to know which yours was built with. Early 1949 and late 1949 have a number of distinct features. Take a lot of pics.

They get stuck, varnish, rust etc etc. Use penetrating oil around the block hole, maybe a few easy whacks with a dead blow hammer on the dist body. Just grab it with your hands and work it back and forth, like opening a fire hydrant. Then more juice, give it a few days. You can carefully pry upwards once broken free, use good judgment.

Are you very familiar with Old's unique bell housings if not you might want to price out an adapter, that is unless money isn't a issue.
It all can be done and it would definitely be unique with cool factor, but very expensive......Tedd

No this is all new to me.i know they're different than chevys that's about it and I have found adapters to fit a t-5 or t10. Maybe you have heard of Ross racing engines? I don't know prices of anything but they have a lot of parts for olds engines.

Ross racing is one of the best for early first generation Olds engines and specialty speed parts. You still might want to make a laundry list, or have them do it and see what you are getting in to before you jump in. Oldsmobile engines and speed parts are nothing like Chevy stuff.....Lost in the fifties ...Tedd

I got the engine to turn a little bit after pulling number 1 and 2 pistons. They came out mostly together. The bearings look good as in normal wear. I'll post some pics soon I have a lot already.

Well This is what I have.it would be easier for sure to put a newer engine in it. But its what I'm using. Its definitely the oldest part going on the truck along with the rear bumper off the same car. I think its going to be cool.

Well I have everything. It was complete in the car. The carb is froze up too. I want to upgrade the cam and up the compression. I kinda thought about using the stock intake though just with a different air filter. I'm not tring to get a lot of power just more the the stock 135hp. I'm going to drive the truck all the time when its done.
