We're all proud of you. Good job ! I think you may have had a longer bolt than should have been in there, When you get a new bolt,screw it in with fingers and check the distance under the head to the mounting surface. It should be less than the thickness of the part you removed.

Congrats. If there was ever a case of patience paying off, this is it. Freezing the vise grips is a great idea. If you had some liquid nitrogen to spray on them that would really work.
