1957 Olds - routing a water temp sensor through the firewall
Good morning,
I'm installing a water temp gauge in my car. The problem is trying to find a spot to run the sensor out through the firewall. The water sensor end is rather large and I'm not seeing any specific place that I can pass the sensor through into the engine compartment. Does anyone know of any good locations? I know I can always drill a hole and use a grommet but thought I would ask first.
Thanks.
I'm curious. Whenever I've installed a temperature sensor, the sensor is separate from the wire that runs to it. I install the sensor and then just run the single wire through the firewall and screw it onto the sensor with a loop fitting crimped onto the end of the wire.
In your case, can the sensor be separated from the wire that attaches to it?
The non=electric temp gauges have the sensor built onto the line connected to the gauge. It can be very difficult to get through the firewall. I have usually been able to find a grommet to get it through.
Yeah, as redoldsman said, mine is the non-electric kind so it makes it much more difficult. I may have to drill a hole and use a grommet if I can't find anything.
I was able to get the sensor routed. I found a rubber grommet on the passenger side of the firewall. The rubber was dry and brittle so I removed it and some wires that did not appear to connect to anything. Once it was through and hooked up I replaced the old grommet with a new one to protect the sensor. I was amazed that the water temp sensor reached all that way. Thanks to everyone for the help.
