1940 olds straight 8 starter dragging Help please
I just bought my 1940 series 90 with a bad starter, and rebuilt it, including the clutch/drive assembly since the original was chewed up pretty bad, and the clutch did not always clutch (it would free spin both ways at times) I got it all in today, and starting sounds much better, but it is not fully disengaging. I bet that is what caused the old one to go poop. I noticed when i put it in the pedal was pushing down about 1/2-3/4 inches. I am trying to find out where to adjust the play. are there starter shims (seams like the answer would be no based on how it goes in) or is there some way to adjust the pedal assembly to help the starter fully dis-engage? I could not find much in the shop manual li have. Thank you for the help!!!
If I remember correctly there is a spring for the return of the starter drive to push it back. Also make sure your teeth engagement has a 1/8 clearance by shimming (don't remember how the starter mounts) if required.

This is my starter plunger. If you look it is a tube inside another tube. I assume it threads but can someone confirm? Its too long pushing the starter arm about 3/4 of an inch or so. When i have theis out and start the car by pushing the starter arm it works perfectly.
Solved
I solved the issue and wanted to post incase anyone else needs it. The rod was bent preventing it from fully retracting and causing the gear to stick. Once I figured that out I was able to heat it up and message it straight again and it slides all the way in now.
the starter plunger should be up against the firewall when not engaged so the felt pad seals fumes etc.. if it is not look for nicks bends or anything causing it not to retract.
Thanks all for the input and looking forward to driving her very soon.
