But, when I tried to start it the solenoid just 'clicks'

With the help of some friendly motorists (angry people behind me in the left-turn-only lane) I got pushed off into a used car lot.

Even with a jump and the old "whack it with a hammer" trick, the solenoid just clicked and the starter wouldn't even move.

I'm guessing the starter itself went, but I had no prior "warnings" from it - seemed to be just fine prior.

If you have a stick couldn't you have had those same pissed off people push bump start your car or had they left you to your own devices... I think we all have been there done that and it sucks every time.....Hope it turns out simple....Tedd

Update

Seems that my positive battery cable got too acquainted with my exhaust manifold and caused the problem.

Of course to get the starter out I had to drop the driver's side exhaust pipe and broke a bolt off in the exhaust manifold...and to get that out to remove the broken bolt I had to disconnect the steering column at the rag joint and remove the z-bar for the clutch.

But - I suppose it could be worse.

Hey Gordon,

I noticed the RI Antique plate! Nice ride and glad you got the problem figured out.

We've had a good stretch of weather here in RI for cruising...

Gordon, glad to see things are coming along. It never ceases to amaze me how one problem leads to another and another and so on. And the cost of the repair goes from a 7 dollar cable to two days of of laying on your back doing things that ones body does not like.....Best of luck....Tedd

Oh that could have been a LOT worse.
There is no fuse in that huge wire
when it shorts out it becomes a welder/ heater.

Easy fix! Compared to a burned hulk.
