1940 Diff pinion thrust washers
1940 Diff pinion thrust washers
Hi- I hadn't planned on going "into" the rear end, but Im glad I did. There is ony one pinion thrust washer- & it's broken.
I happened to find ONE @ Collectors Auto ($25 + s & h) far from the list $ of .17 in the chassis book I have from '49. But I have one of two on the way. This is a "cupped" fibre washer.
group # 5.542
part # 500517 '37-49 all
My scaner is down or I'd include a pic, Sorry.
If anyone has one or a lead on one drop me a line. (I've tried Antique Auto)
Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,
I'm sure NOS parts would be your preference, but if you can't find new, I've got the "pumpkin" from my '47 sitting here, and if you think you might be able to use the thrust washers from it, I will dismantle it and see what kind of shape they are in.
Doug.

Hello Jim,
I don't know if you had any luck finding your parts, but I finally had a chance to tear down the '47 rear. The pinon thrust parts appear to be different than what you describe, perhaps there were changes made post-war? I don't know if this later stuff will still fit, I don't have a chassis manual for these cars. I was surprised to see all the parts in this rear look to be in nice shape. I'll post a pic or two, if you they don't show what you need to see, l can take more. If you can use any parts of this rear end, let me know, I don't intend to use any of it.

Thanks Doug- I don't know how you get the pics in the replay & my scanner is down, so I've taken pictures of the book, & add them to an album in the user cp. I wish I had an actual pic of the part, but it's @ a rear end shop.
Let me know if this helps- who knows "they" might have changed it - I'm going by the book...

Doug, you guys are looking at 2 different things.
Jim is looking for the washers that go between the DIFFERENTIAL pinion gears and the differential case.
What you have pics of is the (drive) pinion gear, bearing, crush sleeve, etc.
Take a look at the location of 5.542 in the 3rd pic Jim posted and it'll be clear what he's looking for.

OK,
As soon as you said gears-plural, I realized we were talking about the spider gears, then cupped washers made sense. I pulled 'em out and they look good to me, no cracks and they don't appear to have any undue wear. Pics:
