early th400 filter
dropped the transmission pan for the first time on my '67 delta-- can I rinse and reuse this early "tube" style filter and reuse it? I purchased wix #58879 which is made in china and it doesn't fit -also purchsed ATP b-24 filter, it too has problems, -- old filter perfect fit -- new filter interferes with stator solenoid -- has anyone purchased a transmission filter recently for this application and got it to work? -- thank you and where did you get it?

If you had trouble getting the pan on it sounds like the new filter may not have been seated good. I'm sure you know these things but just thought I would mention, there is an "O" ring that goes on the tube which slides up into the transmission. Are you sure the old "O" ring was removed? I took a light and looked up in there while there was no filter in there. When I installed mine I put the new "O" ring on the filter, lubed it with ATF and shoved it into place. It took a lot of wiggling to get it seated good. When I put the pan back on it fit fine, no problem.
The filter was indeed made in China, and the first one I got had the "foot" thing which keeps the pick-up tube from touching the bottom of the pan break off. It just wasn't welded good. The next was fine and I had no more problems. The car runs and shifts fine.

The later filter use a different style pan. The early filter sits in a heel shaped dimple in the pan. The later filters are held in place by a special bolt that is threaded into the valve body. To use the later filter you need to drill and tap the valve body for the special bolt, then find the correct bolt to retain the filter, and the tube that goes between the case and filter. It would be far easier to find the correct filter. Its common practice to install 2 o-rings on the pick-up tube. This ensure a good seal between the case and the tube.
I did look at your pictures. That filter looks like the one I removed, it had the copper tubes, mine said AC Delco or some variation of that which made me think it may be the original, not sure of that though.
And although I just changed the filter and fluid myself about 2 weeks ago I do not remember what it looked like inside, I mean where the wires and slonoid(s) were, I have CRS in my old age. But the new filter went in and the pan fit as it should. The new filter needed a bit of wiggling and a good bit of force to get it seated, maybe due to me and my lack of experience, this was the first one of the early filters I had seen.
The blue car has a 400 with switch pitch and a 455, but that trans has a later case and a very late valve body and later style filter. It also has a reworked switch pitch converter from a 2 speed trans, lots of high stall.

A couple of years back I was looking for the right filter for my convertible and stopped at a transmission shop to see where they got theirs. They offered to sell me one they "had in stock", which was a cleaned out used one. They did this all the time when rebuilding transmissions for customers.
