I don't really know myself either, but I checked into a Bowler 200 4r and it was almost 5 grand for a stout one.

Check with a local builder they can do anything those mail order guys can do and if you have a problem it's easy to deal with.

I agree 100%. I had a TH 400 locally rebuilt for my 71 98. I just had a stock rebuild done. The shop owner threw in a deep pan for free!

Keep in mind all 2004Rs are not equal. The Grand National VB along with the Monte SS, and the Hurst/442 Olds directly affect full throttle up shifts. Lonnie at Extreme will hook you up as I have one of his 2004R behind my 71 442. Check out the TurboBuick forums for more info.

I wouldn't trust a local builder. most of them only know basic rebuild.
Most of these guys on the net machine their own parts which makes these transmissions so durable. Also all of them stand behind their product and are very helpful when it comes to installing or any issues that may occur

Also check CK performance. I got quoted around $3700 shipped, for the whole setup, tranny, TC, tv cable adapter.

If you like the 200 idea, consider talking to Dr Dan on this site. He has a well done 200 buildup thread in transmission forum.

Most of the noted builders have been mentioned. I would like to add David Husek, Don ****, and jimmys transmission in Il. Any can build what you need. I would chose one close but that is to save on shipping or getting the car there.

I agree, I wouldn't trust my local trans shop, not with the finicky 2004R. Supposedly does decent work but is a big BSer. Although a guy I worked with got a 4I70E built by him and it died right after the year warranty. No towing but he did drive it hard, still only a stock 5.3. If you can't build the dirt common 4I70E for regular duty, what can you build? I figured an upgraded used 2004R from ROP was less of a crap shoot for half the cost of the local guy. I am sure any warranty would be void anyways since I race.
