Does this transmission require a downshift cable ?

it is a mechanical rod from the pivot point on the firewall to the selector shaft on the sidepan of the transmission - same function as a cable...

The rod is called a TV or throttle valve rod, and besides allowing kickdown, it also regulates pressures internally to the transmission. The throttle valve pressure and governor pressure control shift points. (Throttle valve rod, does what a vacuum modulator does on some transmissions)
