Muncie 4 speed fluid check

Hey all. Trying to check the fluid level in my 67 cutlass muncie 4 speed. I cant find the fill plug. Is it possible the fill plug is what i see in the picture and there is no drain? If i take off this plug i think the fluid should be up to the bottom of the screw hole? How would i change the gear oil? I see tapping a new

one or suction? Is it me or is this a bad design?
sorry if super dumb question but every time i have a issue this site answers with facts! Like having my old man back . Lol

That plug is the fill hole and oil should be up to the bottom of that hole. To change it on this transmission you will need to loosen it and tilt it over. To do that you have to unhook the shifter and linkage, transmission to bellhousing bolts, and the crossmember bolts. Likely have to pull the crossmember back and support with a jack. You could drill and tap where the lower drain plug would be on the newer ones if you like but you need a pipe tap to do it right. Not sure if there is enough room to drill it in the car or not. The newer transmissions had a drain plug.

I suppose you may be able to use a suction pump and hose but you are not going to get it all out. Likely enough though

You are correct. That’s the fill hole bolt. Early muncies mostly didn’t come with a drain hole. Short of removing the transmission, just suck out the gear lube. I fill mine until it dribbles out of the fill hole. You can remove the bolt and access the fill hole and put a finger in to check the level. I tiny bit lower than the fill hole is ok. Note that your speedometer cable looks like it’s dropping down rather low. Check and make sure it’s routed correctly to the firewall.
