Slim Jim Rotomatic 5 questions

I just picked up a 63 F85 with a 215 and roto5 trans. I am very new to this motor and trans so I have a few questions. With the very little research i have been able to do on this trans is that it is finicky... Everything has to be just right. Well i dont think mine is.
First gear gets up and goes pretty good , but then it seems like it just skips 2nd and goes right into 3rd which is an issue when going up a hill. Or if it shifts to 2nd it is only there for a split second. I have read that this trans should only take Type A or it has slipping issues. Although I have not been able to find Type A. ( Will type F suffice ? ) Is there any Adjustments I should look into to fix this problem ? Thank you in advance for any help. -Dutch

You can find Type A on Google, but frankly, I just use Dex III in mine. The throttle valve linkage is very sensitive. Unfortunately the factory adjustment process requires an unobtanium gauge tool. Since I've changed to a non-original carb and had to fabricate linkage anyway, I just adjusted mine by trial and error until it shifted properly. Note that "properly" is still not "great". The RH5 is not one of GM's better automatics. Who thought it was a good idea to have a solid driveline (bypassing the fluid coupling) in SECOND, not third?

I had a Slim Jim in my 64 98 and it never did shift right, even after a rebuild. You should be able to find parts at Fatsco if you ever decide to attempt a rebuild. At the very least they should have a filter.
