change speedo gear? TH400, much trouble?

the good news is a new cable fixed my non operative speedo.

The bad news is that it now reads way fast (3.73 rear, vs. the original ratio of 3.26).

I've changed gears pretty easily on 4 speeds, but haven't done on an auto. Is it that hard?

There seems to be a separate housing that fits into the trans. I assume that has to come out (which I need to replace an o-ring I assume as it leaks).

While I'm hoping I can change the plastic driven gear, will I be able to move it enough from a 3.26 to a 3.73 without having to change out the drive gear as well?

If I have to pull out the internal drive gear, is that a PIA or fairly straightforward?

I'm hoping this isn't that big of a deal, but thought I'd check here before I get too far along.

I guess I'm going to have to do it twice as I'm going to have to pull it just to see what is in it now, before I order the different number teeth gear(s).

Thanks,

It's pretty easy... But you have to know how many teeth are on the drive gear...

If you have to change it or just want to know for sure you can just pull the drive shaft and the extension housing and the gear is easy to change.

Here's a good link with a calculator and GM part numbers.

I have used these part numbers to order gears from GMpartsdirect.com
