87 442 tranny problems
87 442 tranny problems
I have my son's 87 442. It has a 72 built 350 Olds in it. Brad built the motor himself, complete rebuild , wilder cam , edelbrock , holley, headers, g-firce crossmember, true dual flowmaster exhaust. Car is very quick. After he put about 500 miles on the motor he lost 2nd gear. Anybody have any ideas? I don't know all what Brad has in the motor, as far as pistons, the cam, size of the carb etc. Anybody have any ideas as to the H.P. estimate. or how to find out what's in the motor. Plan on doing a complete resto in the near future. Also anybody have any idea how 87 442's had moonroofs. It is factory, because it has the place to crank it open or close if the electric opener doesn't work. Where's a good place to get 442 parts, need some interior parts, headliner, carpet, seats, car has a dark blue interior. Thanks for any info
When the engine went back in did the tv cable get hooked up? Was there any thought given to the tv geometry? The tv cable regulates the pressure in the trans and if the cable isn't set up correctly low pressure will(and probably did in your case) kill the transmission.
If you take the trans somewhere make it very clear that you MUST retain the valve body, servo and governor as these pieces are unique and very different to the run of the mill 2004r. No matter what the shop tells you they are unique, and if they aren't listening to you, this is NOT the shop you want putting your trans together.
Look under the deck lid for the SPID label. It is a white sticker that has a bunch of codes. Look for the CF5 code. This would signify the astro roof as factory installed.

Did he rebuild that (just assuming) 2004r transmission? Even a mildly built 350 will toast an old 2004r transmission in not much time. I would also guess you have a TV cable not correctly installed and adjusted.
Try these guys for interior parts...

The transmission should be able to handle the motor. Check the fluid level twice to ensure it is full. If it was already showing issues such as flaring when shifting it may be time for a rebuild.
