72 Cutlass

I am confused. I wanted to put disc brakes on the rear end. I took the drum brakes off and pulled the axle. Then I called Wilwood to see what I needed. They said they couldn't help me because something is not right with the axle and housing. Everything they showed me was an axle with a sealed bearing pressed on to the axle. Mine has a tapered roller bearing with a race deep in the axle housing. I have tried looking this up on the internet and everything shows a sealed round bearing. Does anyone know what is happening. Thanks a lot. JIM

My guess is the bearing came out of the race, and the race is still in the axle housing.

Can you verify which rear this is? Pictures of the side of the center section, or the casting number on the front of the center section. An original '72 rearend would be a corporate 8.5" 10 bolt rear, but since so many other rears will fit under the car it's best to ID exactly what you have.
