GM only used part of the VIN for this purpose.

So there is no way to figure out what car it came from then?

Do you have a car you're trying to match the transmission to?

There is a movement inside of the 442 collectors crowd where people are asking those to run trans vin numbers for those trying to put their rides back to bone stock original there is big money being offered for the return of original drivetrain pieces.

OF - 69 59053: "OF" indicates this transmission came out of a Delta 88 and is a Turbo Hydra-matic (THM) 400, option code M40. "69" indicates it is from a 1969 model year. "59053" is the serial number of this particular THM unit. This is hazy, but I believe the serial number on these transmissions started over every two years but I don't know if it started over on the odd or even year.

39M424022: This is what they call the VIN derivative - a shortened version of the full VIN. 3=GM division=Oldsmobile. 9=model year=1969. M=assembly plant=Lansing MI. 424022 would be the last 6 digits of the VIN of the Delta 88 from which this transmission came.

A full VIN of this car would look something like this.
354379M424022 (54=Delta 88, 37=holiday coupe),
354399M424022 (54=Delta 88, 39=holiday sedan),
354679M424022 (54=Delta 88, 67=convertible), or
354699M424022 (54=Delta 88, 69=town sedan).

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info I have used many of these over the years in other hot rods one of the best trans I've ever put in a car Im taking it tomorrow to the car wash and clean it up with some degreaser and replace the pan gasket to fix a minor leak should be a great fit for my 455 in my 71 cutlass 442 .

I think we, here, are the 442 collector crowd.

As long as it's a short tail. If not a custom cut driveshaft will be in order. You probably knew that though.

It was already installed in the car when I bought it I pulled it out with the engine since its going in to get rebuilt by a local engine shop here in Detroit.
