Identify a 70 OW trans

How can you be sure you have a real 1970 th400 OW trans?

Besides the OW tag - shows 70-OW plus what numbers?
vin on drivers side (match car vin)?

Someone putting a OW tag on an OG trans?

How can you be 100% sure you have a real OW trans th400 for 1970?

Please give me advise, I've seen and heard different information.

You have to look inside of it, I think that's the only way to tell for sure.

One thing is, it should have this valve body. and the date on the valve body should fit with the date of the case. The VIN should have an M in it. This still does not confirm it is.

An OW has more plates, or clutches inside...I forget exactly. I'm not sure what you want to know. I think there is one specific part related to the clutch/disc setup. The torque converter was probably different. I think you could actually make one from an OG, if you can get that one part. An OW that doesn't have a tag or is unreadable, is not really worth more than an OG. If someone is trying to sell you a tranny and telling you it's an OW, you can't tell if it is.

I'm well aware of the stamping, but it really means nothing. Anybody can buy an NOS OW tag and stamp the case. You can buy the stencils from Inline I think. If the case was cleaned or painted, there's just no way you can be sure.

I am almost sure i can come up with one for you in the next 6 months. If the guy will get off his butt and dig it out. The last one I got from him was $1100 and was a core.
