TH350 downshift cable firewall holes

Hi all, the 1970 Cutlass is getting ready to have the engine and trans reinstalled.
Question:
What is this little round hole next to the square hole for the cable? I searched the PIM and CSM and could find nothing on it.

The cable end that mounts to the firewall:

Its been a while since I messed with this. But I believe there's a plug made for that hole if your car didn't need it when built. I think the plug is square and the round hole may be for a pimple attached to it that is a press fit to help hold the plug in place. Someone who knows for sure will have to speak up!

The TH350 downshift cable pictured goes into the square hole, but there is nothing that goes into the smaller round hole. Or, I don’t know what goes in there.
If nothing, I could plug it as I have a bunch of various sized rubber plugs…

Since I have a TH350 kickdown cable that goes into the square hole, that plug is not for me. When the kickdown cable is installed, the round hole is open. I guess I just need to plug it with something.

Agree. Chewing gum and a can of black spray paint.

Yep Norm, that is what the PIM says to do (basically). I found a page that indicates what to do in this situation.

Thanks to everyone on here for putting up with my incessant pestering about getting this car back together right.

Once it is all together and mechanically fully working, I am going to drive it for a while (unrestored) before I blow it all apart and do a full frame off resto.
