Looking to put one into my '71 Cutlass S Car. I have a 200r4 that's going to be going into it as well. Should I be looking at a B&M or Hurst shifter? This is just a cruising car, so I don't want to be paying too much for one.
If it's just a cruiser, why would you need a ratchet shifter?
I like to get on it from time to time. A friend has one on his Duster another oh his 57 Chevy. I just like the way they feel and work. By cruiser, I mean I don’t race it at the track.
So are you planning to install a factory console, or just a stand-alone floor shifter? With the factory console and shifter, you can look al original but have a 4 speed slap shifter.
I put this modified detent plate from Dan Janes in my factory console shifter and it has been one of the best upgrades I have done to my car thus far. I highly recommend it to anyone considering an aftermarket shifter.

If I can find a factory console I'll go that route.
Rstchet shifter at street car is by far the worst mod money and usability wise ive done.
Why didn't you like it? As I mentioned before two of my friends have it in their cars and love it. I live in Canada so I get 5 to 6 months a year of driving. Maybe put on a few thousand miles a year on the car.

Yeah its fun to bang out a no worries shift, VS hitting nuetral on the factory shifter. (with no detent plate)
I think the factory shifter and console would look better than the Z gate or other similar mini console type shifters
That said the factory console shifter route is likely more expensive, i would be tempted to either retrofit and a newr car console or make a console and fit the hurst or BM shifter to that.

It was like burning rubber; got really old after few first times to play with it. Just found myself always leaving it to D, and found it annoying at normal traffic to navigate between P-R-N-D, versus conventional shifter.
While it is not the cup of tea expressed here. I have a B&M Quicksilver shifter in my '67 hooked to a 700R4. My factory shifter was crap and was for a 2 speed, I wanted a 4 speed shifter. The B&M shifter fits and works well in my console. The throw of the shifter works within the slot in the console without modification. It has switches for neutral safety and reverse lights, that didn't work with the factory shifter, though I wired them to relays for those functions because the switches are small. I must admit the way it functions wasn't what I expected but the only drawback is the wife doesn't drive the car because she doesn't like the shifter, that may or may not be a negative.

For anyone else in this situation, be aware that ShiftWorks has the parts to convert a factory shifter to more gear operation:
2 speed to 3 or 4 speed,
3 speed to 4 speed,
Dual Gate to 4 speed.
This is how my True Slap conversion for the factory floor shifter works. I also have the same features with a 4 speed detent for those changing to overdrives. Changing a 2 speed shifter to a True Slap 3 speed or a 4 speed is simple and much more affordable than a new shifter.
So does Dan Janes and his conversion is a slap shifter option.
I wasn't very clear with my post. Dan makes a detent plate to convert a factory shifter to a 3 or 4 speed slap shifter function.
Shiftworks sells all of the "other" parts to make a "more gears" conversion look factory.
So if you want a slap shifter, use a Shiftworks indicator lens along with Dan's slap shifter detent plate and you have a completely factory looking "more gears" setup.
