1971Console shifter
1971Console shifter
Ok i need a pic of the CORRECT console shifter for my 71' 442. full length center console, w / factory standard shifter (non his / hers non hurst) TH400 trans. Pulled the console to remove the wrong mid 70's shifter and found a real hack job on the drive shaft tunnel plus the wrong shifter. I will post pic of what I have as a replacement asap but I've seen at least two pics of other 71 shifters that have side metal that mine does not HELP......

OK. I was looking at just the shifter but I see the mounting bracket is completely different. I've never had mine apart so I don't know. BUT, when all else fails I consult the Assembly Manual. I'll see what I can find.

On page 116 of Sec 7, there are 2 types of shifter brackets listed (not including the Hurst Dual Gate), 405478 - 1st Type, and 409735 - 2nd Type. Unfortunately there aren't any pics showing the differences.
The one in your third pic, (after a quick Google images/Ebay search) looks to me, to be a '68-'69.

shifter
An yet what appears to be another version for 69-72 consoles.... I don't really care as long as the one I have in ther works correctly because this is a driver car and no one will be looking under the console. It's just a little confusing
That last one is the '70 with neutral safety start and backup light switch, because '70 didn't have the steering column backdrive. That bracket on the side of the other one is for mounting that switch.
I'm completely uncertain of the 68-69 configurations.
The shifter you have up at the top is correct.

The one in your car now,IS the correct shifter.I don't know if the previous owner placed it in the correct position on the floor tunnel. That hacked-open hole should be a simple round hole, about 1 1/8".The second shifter,on the hood of the car,is from a 68 or 69.The shifter in the later photo,is a 1970.The shifter handle itself is the same for all of them. The 68-69 had an additional console bracket, and the neutral safety switch bracket was part of the floor bracket.the 1970 used a seprate,bolt-on bracket,to attach the neutral safety switch.
What is the problem that you are having with your existing shifter?

Shifter
507, The shifter I have in there ( in the first pic) seems to be shifting fine (car is still on jack stands) I'm going to try and repair the hack job in the floor. After doing some research about how the cable goes thru the floor I came across several different pics of what I thought were variations on 71" shifters so I was just a little confused. Thanks to everyone for the info and clarification !!!!
