I don't think this is an O carrier. IIRC the O axle was a 12 bolt and this is clearly a 10 bolt.

I'd have to go look, but I think it is remarkably similar to my Series 2 posi for my 10 bolt.

Monzaz or 507OLDS can tell you for sure. They both build and sell differentials.

Monzaz is "Jim Mitschke" https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...o=newpm&u=1632
507OLDS is 'Brian Trick" https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...=newpm&u=25006

Allan, i think it is O type. the O type has a 10 bolt ring gear and a 12 bolt cover on the axle. one of the other guys will be able to give better details.

That is a posi unit for 12-bolt O-axle.It is 28-spline,and correct for the original GM 3:42-up gears.

Thanks

Warrior, I dont think anyone cuts a ring and pinion for the 588 carrier. You have to use factory gears (3:42-5:00) for this carrier. If you could find a 671 carrier you could get a ring and pinion from Richmond Gear.

You can install the new Richmond gears on the 588 and 672 carriers, but you will need to mill .100" off the backside.I have done this numerous times without any issues.

You're right; Brian confirmed that ^^^. I just looked at mine and the numbers on the carrier are 410408N, should be a 10 bolt carrier for 72.

The 588 carrier came in the 67-70 12-bolt O-axles,so yes,it is correct for your 68.

must be nice Brian to be the recognized guru about something.

No one ever asks me about anything except how I managed to let clover-weed take over every square inch of my property.

I didn't learn it or anything else overnight.
As for your clover problem,I have plenty of that too.I gotta treat it this weekend. It's the worst I have ever had it.I think it has a lot to due with the mild winter, and no freezing.More bugs, more spiders, crazy weeds, and plenty of everything else.

Hmmm, I got a can of Killex (2-4-D) concentrate but the problem is getting it to you. You must know some farmers you can still get that stuff from?

You will need a new ring & pinion set. The crown gear without the pinion will be useless as it is patterned to the pinion gear that is missing in action.
