72 transmission issues

Restoring a 72 Cutlass 350 automatic... Reverse slips bad until engine and transmissions warmed up.. It will set and rev up and after a minute or so slowly start backing up. Once it it is totally warm it seems to work almost normally. Forward seem normal. Would this be a bad reverse band or a fluid level issue?
Rebuild or replace? or ????
all suggestions welcomed.

Drop the pan, that will give you an idea how much life is left in the trans. It it works satisfactory once it’s warmed up changing the fluid and filter will probably solve your issue. Sounds like the filter is partially plugged up, once the fluid warms up and thins out the clutches will apply. If changing the fluid and filter does “fix” the problem, it’s like putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound. A trans overhaul is probably in your not so distant future.
