Tuning up a 5yr sitting Hydra-matic 4-S
My son (13) and I are replacing engines from a 1963 88 to a 1963 Starfire. The transmission out of the 88 has been slipping real bad in 2nd gear plus... So, we have a transmission that was a runner or shifter, but has been sitting in the 88 trunk for over 5 years. What should we do to make sure the transmission will work and shift properly before we install into the Starfire- The original Starfire motor and trans have sat outside for over 30+ years-So that transmission is probably not a option?Should we open pan-replace a filter? and fluid?. any other maintenance items???
Hi trackz man, for mine 63-98 custom sport coupe all I did was a fluid change, filter, front and rear seal, that was in 94 and still works like a charm.
While the tranny is unbolted from the engine chech the dampening plate and make sure the springs are tight,if they are loose you will hear a rattling sound at idle from the vibration.
good luck

Make sure you have a filter before you drop the pan. Those filters have gotten hard to find and often expensive depending on who has them.
For Slim Jims, experts are few and far between. Most people who knew anything about them are retired or dead.
Maybe there is not any trans experts out there. LOL???
Here is a thread that covered this not long ago.
